We are still living in Philadelphia with our dog, Kate (now 13!). After five-ish years in Philadelphia we have more friends and communities here, although sometimes less than we want (blame the pandemic for a poor start). We've recently been thinking about getting a roommate (flatmate) and looking at other ways of building more community here.
Workwise, we both still focus on the same topics (nonprofit operations for Abraham, wild animal welfare science for Mal). Working in science has been a bit of a bizarre experience in 2025 — the funding landscape has changed dramatically, as well as the topics of focus in the US. Still working through the implications of that.
Our siblings' kids (4 boys, two on each side) are doing well and are extremely cute. We wish our family wasn't spread quite so far apart (Albuquerque + Chicago for Abe, DC-area for Mal). But Philly is a great jumping off point for travel, so we make trips to see friends & family relatively frequently. As Mal's dad, Fred, continues to have heart issues, we are making more trips to DC to get time together.
We were lucky to take a bunch of trips in 2025 (Scotland, Alaska, Bristol, Stowe, etc. -- some photos below). Abe would happily move to Scotland after one visit for the weather. Alaska we visited on a cruise, something Mal thought they would never do, but Abraham's parents generously invited us and Fred — allowing him to tick off his 49th state (North Dakota, unfortunately, may remain forever unchecked). The views and wildlife were spectacular, but of course we all got a tremendous flu at the end.
As always, you are welcome to visit us any time! We love company.
We moved to the Spring Garden neighborhood in Philadelphia. Closer to the train station and to nice walks along the Schuykill river. Also closer to most of our friends.
The building we live in now is quite interesting: it's the Reading Company Grain Elevator. The building went through a bunch of lives before becoming an apartment building. Below our floor are ten-ish floors of empty grain silos, and below that a wine store.
Abraham started a new role, working at GovAI, a think thank that works on AI governance stuff. He closed down Good Structures, his consulting firm, which was good (because he's less busy), and bad (because it was a perfectly fine business and he thinks it's sad to get rid of that).
Mal began a postdoc at NYU, studying urban wild animal welfare. They're on sabbatical from their main job (Wild Animal Initiative) while they complete the postdoc. They're also cooking up new ideas for experimenting with new types of scientific funding in this space, so if you have any billionaire friends who want to fund science, send them our way.

The small white blobs are mountain goats.
Alaska sea otter courtesy of Abe's mom. We saw sea otters in Scotland as well, but our photos were unfortunately not of this caliber.
If you get a chance, take the scenic train in Skagway. Fascinating landscapes.

The only thing I'll miss about our old house is the garden, which got some interesting visitors.
